Road from Kotka passing the restored part of the Kyminlinna fort. Earth wall in front of the actual wall, to prevent cannon fire from directly hitting the stone portion. The pentagon-shaped fort covers roughly 74 hectares or 183 acres so the walls are long. Closer look at the unrestored portion of the wall. The reason for the staggered shape of the wall is to prevent enemy soldiers from hiding next to the wall, by allowing them to be 'sweeped' easily.

The unrestored portion is full of small holes and small trees sticking out from between the rocks. How the restored and unrestored portions compare. Restored outer wall on the other side of the road, it's rather low and is mainly meant to absorb cannon fire while not allowing the enemy to easily retreat if they charge the fort. The wall is maybe 5 metres tall, Kyminlinna housed military barracks and other operations until 2005 - now it's in civilian use. Continuous military presence has prevented the walls from being ruined, although they've needed restoration.

Corner near the middle of one of the sides. View to the other direction, and the outer wall on the right compared to the inner wall on the left. Slopes likely allowed men to move easily between the different levels. The middle part of the road-facing side, and a seemingly disused gate. The main gate which seems to be a later addition since it has been placed quite a bit away from the middle of the side, and along a potential firing line.

The gates are closed, the fort is apparently not open to the public due to being restored and investigated. View through the gates, the fort is half-full of thriving forest along with the buildings. One last look of the side, also showing the uppermost decorative stones well.
